The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation is excited to partner with the tour of LS Lowry’s celebrated painting, “Going to the Match.”

Sir Bobby Charlton set up The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation to improve the lives of people in war-decimated countries. He believed in the power of football to bring people together. As part of the programme of activity on the L.S. Lowry’s “Going to the Match” tour, workshops will be organised with a particular focus on drawing people together from refugee communities to experience the painting, to share their love of football and what it means to them.

LS Lowry’s masterpiece Going to the Match has begun a year-long tour of five North West venues. The tour started in December 2023 at Gallery Oldham.

On the 18th of April, the painting moved to the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, Birkenhead where it is on display alongside other works by Lowry. It will stay here until the 27th of July, before moving to the National Football Museum, Manchester on the 19th of August.

The tour will then finish at the Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre, Bury on the 19th of October.

Supported by a £95,000 grant from Arts Council England through its National Lottery Project Grants programme and additional support from The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, the tour will mean this iconic painting can be enjoyed by the widest possible audience across the region.
