Back to where it all began

This week, we look back to where it all began: what made legendary footballer Sir Bobby Charlton turn with such determination to changing the lives of victims of conflict? As an ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Sir Bobby visited Bosnia-Herzegovina, Vietnam and then, in 2009, Cambodia.

”It was a very emotional visit. Seeing youngsters without limbs just getting on with their life is hard to take.  Coming from our world, it is difficult to come to terms with the idea that you could be in danger just walking down the street”, he said at the time.“We are doing what we can to help the young people be aware of the dangers of landmines, but we cannot solve the main problem – the removal of the landmines themselves…It is awful to think that so many years after the fighting has ended people are still being crippled by landmines. This is a problem that can be beaten, but it needs international support to do it.”
