For many during this lengthy lockdown period, taking a long stroll down memory lane has become as part of the daily routine as the allotted hourly exercise. Many have found welcome diversion, even escapism, in the eloquent, persuasive paeans in print and over the airwaves to England sporting giants. Who is the greatest?

Where to start? Sir Steve Redgrave, Lewis Hamilton, Sir Ian Botham and Jonny Wilkinson are rightly, regularly mentioned. Certainly Bobby Moore, Lord Coe, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Sir Ben Ainslie. Definitely Sir Bradley Wiggins, James Anderson, Victoria Pendleton and Lester Piggott, amongst distinguished others. So many admirable, legitimate choices. Lennox Lewis or Henry Cooper? Barry Sheene or Carl Fogarty?
