Helping Children in War-torn Ukraine

Devastatingly, this February marks the three-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine. The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation has been privileged to support FC Shakhtar’s United Together project, giving children in three locations in Ukraine the chance to meet up for weekly football sessions in safe spaces where they can heal, grow and have fun.

These children face challenges unimaginable to us in their daily lives. Routines are disrupted, homes are lost, family members have left to fight, knowing they may never return.

Nazar is one of the young boys who joined the programme in Zaporizhzhia last summer. He was extremely shy and unsure of himself, attending sessions only with his best friend by his side. Taking those first steps onto the field was a challenge, but thanks to the nurturing environment created by his coach and the kind encouragement of his teammates, Nazar began to blossom.

By autumn, he not only competed in his first city competition but became a natural leader on the pitch, lifting his entire team with his determination and spirit. Today, he is his team’s top scorer. He attends extra training sessions, and has built friendships that are helping him thrive both on and off the pitch. He has discovered his confidence, strength, and love for the game. He is a shining example of the remarkable resilience of children.

United Together is about far more than football. Through training and playing, with regular sessions with psychologists and structured programmes focusing on emotional resilience, it gives children the opportunity to socialise with other kids, to take a break from the constant fear of war and rediscover the joy of simply having fun despite the hardships around them. As well as developing physical skills, United Together gives the children a sense of belonging, helping them build self-belief, and providing a safe outlet for their emotions.

Nazar’s journey illustrates the impact of this programme. As we mark this solemn anniversary of war, his story reminds us why our work matters and how sport and community can change lives in even the darkest times.

Sir Bobby believed passionately that all children should be able to play football safely. He believed in the power of football to help young people develop, learn new skills on and off the pitch, and have a chance in life. The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation is committed to fulfilling his vision by supporting children like Nazar, and giving them the tools and support to thrive.
